Acting & Improvisation Workshop
Young Roustabouts are back! Don't miss an exciting Acting & Improvisation Workshop for ages 10-18, taught by professional teaching artists from The Roustabouts Theatre!
Young actors will build confidence and creativity while learning how to use improvisational skills in productions, rehearsals, auditions, and everyday life. Those interested in monologue work will have the opportunity for one-on-one coaching, while other participants learn and grow by observing the process. This workshop is perfect for students of all experience levels who want to sharpen their performance skills in a fun, supportive environment!
This dynamic experience is offered as two one-day workshops from 2-5 PM, and students may enroll in either or both sessions. Each one-day workshop is $60 or both for $100.
January 10, 2026 | 2 PM - 5 PM & February 21, 2026 | 2 PM - 5 PM
Workshops will take place in Point Loma. Location and directions to be provided upon registration.

Meet the Instructors
Phil Johnson
Artistic Director of The Roustabouts Theatre Co.
Phil Johnson is the Artistic Director and proud co-founder of The Roustabouts Theatre Co. For TRTC he’s directed:
Looped,
Hand to God,
Savoyard Murders, and readings of
All My Sons,
Falsettos,The Little Foxes,
12 Angry Men,
Doubt, and others. He also started the new Great Jewish American Playwright Series/JPlays at the JCC. As an actor he has appeared at most San Diego theaters and in numerous original traveling solo shows including
A Jewish Joke which opened Off-Broadway in NYC in 2019. He played in
Les Miserables on Broadway and on tour, the Canadian production of
Sunset Boulevard, and the 1st National Co. of
Miss Saigon. He is a two-time winner of the San Diego Critics Circle Craig Noel Award for acting, and he is a founder of the San Diego Theatre Alliance.
Becky Cherlin Baird
Artistic Director of The JCompany Youth Theater
Becky Cherlin Baird is the founding Artistic Director of The JCompany Youth Theater in La Jolla, California and owner of Kids On Stage Productions. She is known as a pioneer of children’s theater in San Diego and continues to direct, choreograph and produce across the country. Becky's love for working with kids in the performing arts has allowed her the opportunity to work as the children’s casting director and choir director with the Broadway First National Tour of Joseph...Dreamcoat as well as Food Network on Chopped Junior and taken her to theatres on Broadway including; The King and I, Fiddler on the Roof and Matilda. During her career as a theatre and music teacher, Becky has spent time working with at risk youth and teens in various homes and support facilities. These experiences helped her grow and remind her why it is important that all children have access to the creative and dramatic arts.
